Multi-Day Trips

The Evolution Loop     5 Day

This majestic five-day tour visits the Evolution region in the heart of the High Sierra. Beginning in Sabrina Basin, we will take the direct route over Echo Col to the historic Muir Hut. From there, we will choose a peak ascent, possibly Mt. Goddard itself, the centerpiece of the High Sierra. We'll finish the loop with yet another spectacular section under the wings of Mt. Darwin.

Route Description (routes may vary)

Day 1 - From the end of the plowed road at Aspendale or higher, we'll begin by skiing along Lake Sabrina (9,150') to Moonlight Lakes (11,050') or a bit higher to Echo Lake (11,600').

Day 2 - A beautiful climb below Clyde Spire then takes us over Echo Col (12,400'), the technical crux of the tour. A steep descent brings us to a traverse to Helen Lake (11,600'), then on to Muir Pass (11,950') and the stone shelter, the John Muir Hut.

Day 3 - Great side trip skiing with just day packs to one of the nearby peaks including Mt. Salomons (13,034') and Black Giant (13,330') or Mt. Goddard (13,568').

Day 4 - From Muir Pass, very pleasant downhill skiing and touring takes us through the Evolution Basin and a chain of lakes, leading to Evolution Lake (10,850'), the low point of the descent before climbing on to the Darwin Bench (11,200') to a campsite at about 12,000'. This incredible spot near the head of the cirque boasts views of the north face of Mt. Darwin and the famous Mendal Couloir of Mt. Mendal.

Day 5 - A steep ascent in the morning tops us out on Lamark Col (12,900'). A side trip to the summit of Mt. Lamark (13,417') is worth the effort. From here, the descent is fantastic, about 4,000' in all back to North Lake and the trailhead at Sabrina.
