Youth Ski Mountaineering Camp

Youth Ski Mountaineering Camp     5 Day
Tioga Pass & Yosemite, Sierra Nevada

The Back CountryThis 5-day program, is designed to take strong skiing young athletes (age 12-18) into a high alpine backcountry environment to practice travel, climbing with skins, steep skiing and mountaineering technique to help increase safety and security.

The camp will be based from a vehicle (walk-in) campground near Tioga Pass at over 9,000 feet. It will include day trips from base camp, then a 2-day overnight tour with a high mountain, light-weight camp.

We will visit high glaciers including the Conness Glacier and the Dana Glacier practicing alpine, rock and snow climbing and descending skills, camp craft and camping techniques. There will also be afternoon/evening Top-rope rock climbing sessions.

The guides will be Eric DesLauriers , Peter Mayfield. All are exceptionally qualified professional ski mountaineering guides with great experience teaching and coaching young skiers.



We will have 3 groups:

Group A: Age 15-18 yrs. who are return students skiing and climbing at a more advanced level.

Group B: Age 15-18 yrs. who are advanced skiers, but new to ski touring and ski mountaineering.

Group C: Age 12-14 yrs. who are advanced skiers ready for adventure.

  • Climbing ski/skin travel
  • Use of avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel
  • Avalanche and hazards assessment
  • Risk management and decision making
  • Climbing with ice axe and crampons
  • Using harness and rope on rock and snow
  • Controlled steep skiing skills
  • Leave No Trace backcountry principles

Prerequisite Skills
  • Strong, advanced alpine skiers in excellent physical condition
  • Previous ski touring (with climbing skins) and rock climbing useful
