This is the perfect program to get you in the mood and prepared for our European style High Route ski adventures. Based from our Backcountry Adventure Center at Sugar Bowl and the comfort of the European influenced Lodge and restaurant at Sugar Bowl, it sets the perfect stage for great mountain skiing adventure with a similar feel to starting the world famous Haute Route.

This 3-day course is designed to practice and prepare advanced skiers to skills that could come up along the Haute Route.

Itinerary:
Day 1
Lift accessed backcountry skiing from Sugar Bowl
  • Gear selection, day pack packing techniue
  • Introduction to avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel
  • Ungroomed snow conditions skiing techniques
  • Uphill touring with skins
  • Uphill turns and kickturns
  • Afternoon/evening European Haute Route preparation
  • Day 2
  • Advanced uphill travel technique
  • Steep terrain kick turns
  • Transceiver/rescue practice
  • Glacier/mountaineering harness and basic kit
  • Ski anchors
  • Roped ski lower/rappel
  • Ski crampons
  • Basic belays and being short roped on mixed terrain
  • Practicing glacier skiing scenario
  • Day 3
    Enjoy a longer ski travel tour practicing the application of skills as on the Haute Route



    Prerequisites:
    This program requires strong intermediate to advanced skiing skills for skiers ready to link turns in ungroomed snow conditions. Skiers and riders need to be in at least very good physical condition ready for properly paced uphills with climbing skins.
