The Buttermilk Camp, Hwy 395 2 Day

We'll meet in Bishop the evening before and shuttle to the trailhead for a good early start the next morning. We'll drive in as far as snowline permits to climb and ski the 40° Wahoo Gully of Mt. Locke. From a car camp with lounge chairs, coolers and Coleman stove, we'll rest before the next days climb and ski the Clyde Couloir on Mt. Emerson, again about 40° in slope angle.

Route Description (routes may vary)

Day 1 - From our campsite, we'll shuttle to the high point of the road, usually to where it's blocked by snow. We'll begin walking or touring to the slopes beneath east face of Mt. Locke (12,634'). We'll choose either the Wahoo Gullies or the Kindergarden Chute, make our ascent with ice axe and crampons (conditions dependent), then enjoy our ski descent.

Day 2 - Again from camp, we'll shuttle to the high point of the road and follow the drainage toward Mt. Emerson (13,204') and on to the ultra impressive Clyde Couloir, first climbed by Sierra pioneer, Norman Clyde on July 6th, 1930. The descent is fabulous and one of the best in the Sierra.
