Mt. Shasta Steeps 2 Day

We will tour in to the relatively easily accessible camp known as 50/50, between Horse Camp and Helen Lake on the standard route that climbs Shasta. The camp is surrounded by fantastic ski bowls for some warm-up runs. The following morning we'll climb to ski the steep Trinity Chutes, north of the standard route. They provide skiing in the 40° plus range. This route is for no-fall, steep skiers who understand the consequences of serious descents.

The Route:
From the trailhead at Bunny Flat (6,860'), we'll tour with climbing skins past Horse Camp (7,880') and on to 50/50 Camp (about 9,400'). That afternoon, with light packs, we'll climb to about 10,450' to a high point on Casaval Ridge then a great, steep descent back to camp.

The following morning, we'll leave camp and climb past Helen Lake to the infamous and spectacular Trinity Chutes, choosing the one in the best condition to climb and ski, usually to about point 12,300'.

The descent is amazing with skiing starting at about 45°, then easing to about 40° back to Helen Lake and down to camp. After picking up camp, we'll enjoy the long, pleasant run back to Bunny Flat.

Special Considerations:
Ice axe, boot crampons, ski crampons and a ski mountaineering harness are required. Please see the Equipment List.
