Winter Mountaineering

Ice Climbing 1     2 Day

These winter ice climbing weekends are designed for beginning ice climbers. Ironically, the most spectacular ice in California is also the most accessible. In winter, the waterfalls near June Lake and the leaking aqueduct in Lee Vining Canyon freeze solidly into the crystal-blue medium of the slippery game. You learn to read the ice and use your crampons' front points effectively, place and remove ice screws, and set up belays.

You'll have the opportunity to try different ice climbing tools to see which type works best for you. These seminars encourage all climbers to try their hand at winter waterfall ice climbing. Each year the ice is different, so return students are welcome.

Skills covered will include:
  • Appropriate clothing, equipment and accesories
  • Approach snow climbing skills with ice axe
  • Avalanche and hazards assessment
  • Harness, helmet and climbing gear sizes and adjustments
  • Low angle ice climbing technique
  • High angle ice climbing, 2 tool, front point technique
  • Belaying and lowering on ice
  • Ice screw placement and removal
  • Anchoring skills
  • Belay station, small stance management
