Rock Anchoring Clinic    Step 4
Donner Pass

This course studies, evaluates and practices setting up both natural and artificial climbing anchors. We'll study how to safely evaluate the anchor site, placement of wedge-shaped nuts and mechanical camming devices along with appropriate methods of equalization to form a master point.

We will compare strategies for multi-point anchors for top-roped climbing as well as setting up anchors for lead-through multi-pitch climbing.

Skills covered will include:
  • Understanding redundancy to build safe anchors
  • Top rope natural and artificial anchors
  • Safety near the edge
  • Throwing a rope to the ground
  • Placing and removing Stoppers and camming units
  • Self-equalizing and pre-equalized anchors
  • Top belay station management
  • Belaying with redirect vs. direct belays
  • Anchoring a retrievable rappel
  • Rappel backups
  • Rope care and coiling
