This course studies, evaluates and practices setting up both natural and artificial climbing anchors. We'll study how to safely evaluate the anchor site, placement of wedge-shaped nuts and mechanical camming devices along with appropriate methods of equalization to form a master point.
We will compare strategies for multi-point anchors for top-roped climbing as well as setting up anchors for lead-through multi-pitch climbing.
Skills covered will include:
Understanding redundancy to build safe anchors
Top rope natural and artificial anchors
Safety near the edge
Throwing a rope to the ground
Placing and removing Stoppers and camming units
Self-equalizing and pre-equalized anchors
Top belay station management
Belaying with redirect vs. direct belays
Anchoring a retrievable rappel
Rappel backups
Rope care and coiling
