Direct Aid & Big Wall Technique
Step 9
Donner Pass
This course focuses on the techniques used in direct aid climbing and help prepare you for a "big wall" climb. You'll learn to test and trust your placements and climb with aid slings and daisy chains. Make trick aid placements, clean a pitch following with mechanical ascenders and pack and haul a grade V or VI haulbag. We will finish the course with techniques to descend or "bail" a route with the haulbag.
Skills covered will include:
Aid progress with aid slings (etriers) and a daisy chain
Testing and trusting placements
Leading and following a pendulum traverse
Setting up a big wall hanging belay
Following and cleaning a pitch with mechanical ascenders
Hauling technique; 2:1, 3:1 redirect body hauling
Lowering out a haulbag from the lower belay stance
Backlining and unjamming a haulbag
